Compare and contrast- Of mice and men

Today while we watched the movie version of of mice and men, I noticed some some slight, and some significant differences between the book and the movie. One of the most significant to me, was probably (the last 5 minutes of the movie, or the last 3 pages of the book), when george kills lennie, in the movie george talks to lennie about tending rabbits and suddenly stands up, twists and shoots him in the back of the head, i found this was too sudden, and almost a little cocky. in the book, there is much more dialogue, and also one of the most significant parts, when lennie twists his head around to look at george, and george says "No, Lennie. look down the acrost the river, like you can almost see the place" george says this for two reasons: He doesn't want lennie to turn around and see the gun, and freak out, he wants lennie to be happy and calm. the second reason is that, george loves lennie, and they are so close, he feels like he won't be able to live without him, and he knows that if he and lennie lock eyes, it will all be over and he won't be able to shoot him. another difference i found was with curley's wife, in the book, she seems like she has much more energy, and seems more enthusiastic and charismatic, where in the movie she seems much more depressed and less enthusiastic. i think this could have been for two reasons, either it was the directors way of taking a different direction with the character, or the actress herself was just lacking in energy in charisma. over all, i think the movie followed the book pretty well, and i think watching the movie was a nice break from working.

Dear George

Dear George,
I heard the news about you and lennie from candy, and i'm really sorry. I know it's really not my place to state my opinion, especially with your loss, but i feel very strongly about this. You did the right thing. I understand the other guys' perspectives, but candy told me that curley was going to aim for his gut, which means he would have painfully bled out, and lennie was a sweet guy, very nice, i remember him from when i met him on christmas a few years back, and i'm positive that he would have never done something maliciously. Candy told me curley told you guys to shoot him in the stomach, which would have been agonizing, and it's not what lennie deserved. I'm glad that george died peacefully and that he was in a good place, and that he was thinking about those rabbits, instead of suffering. I miss George, even though i only met him once, i felt like we could have been close friends, and that maybe if i hadn't stayed in weed, i could have traveled with you guys, and we all could have bought that farm and lennie could have tended the rabbits.
Sincerely,
Jackson Teare

Of mice and men 2

i think that Lennie's quote is basically telling the reader that Lennie is easily frightened, or gets anxious easily. i think lennie says this because i think he feels threatened by George, who warns him not to have anything to do with the the woman who peeks into their bunk house. "...Don't even look at that bitch. i don't care what she says and what she does. i seen em' poison before, but i never seen no piece of jail bait worse than here" George says this to lennie as soon as she is out of ear shot, to avoid any more trouble. George sees the woman, and is almost immediately infatuated with love for the pretty lady. i think this lady could also symbolize and remind him of the girl who's dress he grabbed in weed, and that it was a pretty girl with a soft and pretty dress on, and all he really wants to do is pet the soft dress, and not hurt anybody.
(39) "Well, he seen this girl in a red dress. Dumb bastard like he is, he wants to touch ever'thing he likes. just wants to feel it." George says. but from the girls' perspective, there she is, just standing thee to cross the street, when some huge dude walks up and grabs onto her clothing. she doesn't know he doesn't want to know her. she doesn't know that he was only enticed by the pretty and potentially soft red dress, she was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, and so was lennie.

OF MICE AND MEN PART 1

1) I think lennie is dependent on george because he is a very simple person. he is kind of the stereo-typed, big, lovable, not too bright and hard working guy, who i think may be slight be mentally challenged, or kind of slow. From the 10 pages we've read so far, i already know that lennie has a big heart, and he doesn't mean the things he does, like killing small mice, or forgetting most of the important things george tells him.

2) i think this quote means that george and lennie probably grew up together, and that they have a strong bond, so close they could even be brothers. george also seems to be very impatient with george, and that could either be from growing up together and getting used to arguing over the years, or it could be george's new found impatience because lennie did something wrong, and got them kicked out of their town, and turned them into fugitives.

Speak, partner interview

Name: Kyle Gainey

KG, what do you think the symbolism between mel and the tree is?

"well, i really believe this goes pretty deep, because the tree symbolizes that everyone and everything changes over time, and that things don't always go your way. and also, the tree is like her safe zone, because it's like a large thing to hide her from the real world"

Do you think her school is really isolating, or do you think it's just mel's attitude?

"well, i believe it is a bit of both, because if you put yourself out there, and not try, to make friends, then no one will notice you, and you won;t have any friends, but then also, there are those types of people in any type of school, that exist to pick on you, no matter how much you try and put yourself out there."

If Melinda's parents were more involved, do you think her relationship and feelings toward them would be different? Also, would her attitude in life be more positive?

"oh yeah. definitely, i mean depending on the subject, parents are there to help you. in Mel's case, if she just opened up a little bit, her attitude to herself and to her parents would positively change drastically. she should also not run away when her parents try to help her, and at least met them half way."

What do you think of the book so far? Even though it may be a bit dramatic it's still high school, so is it really that far from reality?

"what i think about the book, is that it;s a sad book, and i really don;t like the subject matter, but i like it because it shows great insight towards kids who are really having these struggles, and also not having nobody to talk to, and nowhere to go. and that's why, the book is almost realistic, it really makes you think about what you do when you see someone on the street walking alone all sad, it makes you wonder why they're that way."

I'm college bound!

Today while we were calculating our GPA's, and i could at the very least say i was shocked and horrified. at 2.96, i knew something had to be done. after Looking through my binder to see if i had forgotten to turn in homework, i found that it wasn't that i wasn't turning in homework, i was doing it but i was just not turning it in, or not quite finishing it. At this moment, i'm working on both of those. at the same time, i felt a bit of excitement, because i felt like now there was a goal in school i was working towards, i mean, i have always liked school, but now i feel like there's a goal, or more like a high-score to work towards.

last year, at my middle school for the last month of school, we worked on a college project, where we used Collegeboard.com, so i was familiar with how to use the database. I learned more about specific schools that might be a good fit for me, and came up with UC Berkeley, UC Santa Barbara, and NYU. The two UC schools i was looking at had high percentages of students who went into science, or biology fields, which biochemistry would be under, which is a study that i am interested in. the third school, NYU is famous for it's performing arts school, and dance choreography is something that is interesting and exciting to me.

For me, the next step is to just work on my grades as much as i can. i'm going to go into the office hours, even if it kind of conflicts of with my carpool plan, i need to get my B's to A's, and A's to A+'s.. I will work as hard and as diligently as i can for the next 4 years, and remember my favorite quote from Mexican white boy, as stated by senior: "You can't fuel a rocket with the same juice you fill a lawnmower with, so you gotta figure out what you is; a rocket, or a lawnmower."

Brad's descriptive sound essay

http://bradleyhumanities.blogspot.com

1. The Most capturing moment to me, was probably when Brad described how the sound is like a baby crying. the main reason I thought this, because although i didn't hear that in the recording, i thought it was a good analysis of the sound.

2. Brad described his sound with excellent words, and interesting comparisons. He did a good and interesting job with Bringing his sound to life with the different descriptive words he used. i also liked listening to the sound while i read the description, because i really felt it added to the affect.

3. I think the only issue with brad's writing was it was a bit hard to follow the first time i read it, and i think the writing could have been brought even more to life if he had used more adjectives in his writing. I also think that if he added to the Section about how the audio could have been in a carnival ride, i think that would be a great addition to the writing.

Touching Nasty.

While waiting for the mystery touch item, i sat in silence as quiet as a New york city evening. The tension rose as Diana came closer to our table with the mystery substance, i could tell because the amount of screeching that sounded like squealing puppies, like you might hear at the animal shelter coming from the rest of the class was becoming louder, and closer so my table. As Diana came closer and closer, i could hear her footsteps, and became more and more nervous. as time went ton, the tension grew, with the kind of excitement and nervousness someone might experience before a huge roller-coaster, diana found my hand, lifted it, and placed it into one of the most disgusting jars of anything i've ever touched. It was at first cold, like i was jamming my hand into a pot of cold mashed potatoes, then it started dripping off of my hand, and i felt how sticky it was, like someone had a bowl of sugar and poured sugar water into it. after a minute or so, i realized it was a sticky, sugary, nasty liquid, mainly because kids were shouting "OH MY GOD, IT'S *$@(*!" and i did the unspeakable, i tasted it. the Extreme sweetness of the sugary mystery element hit me like a rock, and i immediately lifted my blind-fold. over all, this was an extremely disgusting experience, that was completely disgusting and necessary. The end.

sound is art

Here is a link to the sound recording: http://margaretnoble.net/blog/norelco-100/

The norelco 100 model
By listening to the "norelco 100" Recording, i immediately realized that the Audio recording was an advertisement, particularly, because of the tone of the man's voice. The way he spoke was with a tone that reminded me of an advertisement that someone might hear in the old cartoon "speed racer" that i used to watch when i was younger. his tone of voice was very relaxing, and the audio sounded reasonably high quality for such an old sounding recording. This recording was very easy for me to listen to, because the tone of the man's voice was very relaxing and calm, and in many ways nostalgic for me. one of the best parts of this sound recording was definitely, the music in the beginning, middle and the end of the advertisement, what i liked about these sounds was that there seemed to be an old popping noise at different and random parts of the recording, which someone might be used to hearing if they had norelco 100's and older models of tape recorders back when this came out. Over all, this recording was strangely satisfying to listen to, because i felt like it was kind of a taste of what it was like to listen to music and advertisements when my parents and grandparents might have listened to when they were my age.

MWB 3

Danny feels like he doesn't belong in certain places, because he's half white and half mexican, and he doesn't speak any spanish. I feel like I can connect in certain ways to danny, and that i can't connect at certain times. I feel like this is one time i can't connect, however i can feel sympathetic towards danny, it would be hard for me to think of a time i was in his position. I feel sorry for danny and happy for danny at the same time- sorry because he's in this whole new world that he hasn't been exposed to, and he's trying to make the best of it for himself.

Mexican white boy part 2

1.) I think Uno begins to feel regret when he sees Danny's eye, because he's started to realize that danny is actually kind of a cool guy, and he's building a reputation up in national city. Uno may also think that because he throws a baseball extremely well, Danny might even be willing to teach Uno things about baseball so he can finally impress somebody and gain back the reputation that he feels he deserves.

2.) Throughout the book, danny has flashbacks about when he tried out for the baseball team at leucadia, and how he made a mistake every time he tried to show the rest of the team he was really a talented baseball player. At the carnival, Danny has his first drink of alcohol, and doesn't stop after one sip. after a while, Danny gets so drunk, things seem to become blurred, and danny begins to feel more comfortable with his cousin and her friends. After the other kids have had their turns at throwing the baseballs at the timer, danny gives it a shot after Uno's friend gets dragged off, there's only one ball left so danny gets tossed up to the mound to pitch. i think the reason he does so well, was because he was so drunk he didn't realize he was actually in front of people, so he just threw the balls like he was playing one of his bucket-ball games that he'd play by himself at the vacant ballpark.

Mexican white boy part 1

During the reading, Uno Punched danny in the head, apparently because danny cracked the tennis ball, and hit manuel in the face with the stickball bat on accident. In the book, the by-standers may think that uno beat danny up because he hit manuel, however, I, the reader can tell that there is probably some deeper meaning to the punch. Although we've only read about 30 pages into the book, we can already tell that uno  is full of pride, and that he might have punched danny because he hit manuel, and also maybe because danny just shows up, on HIS block, and shows him up, anybody would feel hurt, but i think uno took especially bad because he has this huge reputation that he needs to keep up, so he can remain the "top dog" in the col-de-sac.

WHO AM I?

I am Jackson Hugh. I'm a kid, with a lot to say, but I don't know how to say it, i love music and friends and most things in general, and currently i'm feeling bad about deleting (on accident!) a certain new friends Multi-media project. This year I've made a bunch of new friends who i'm so happy to know. i feel like my friends and family really affect who I am and who i will be.
